All Molefi Ntseki’s side needed heading into their final group stage match of the continental showpiece was a victory against the Cranes to keep their aspirations of progressing alive. For much of the second half, it looked as though a quarter-final berth would materialise.
Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo’s 83rd-minute strike put South Africa 3-1 up, but Ntseki’s charges conceded two late penalties, which saw the match end 3-3. The result ultimately ousted Bafana from the competition, while tournament co-hosts Uganda booked their place in the knockout stages.
Following his team’s progression to the final eight, Uganda boss Morley Byekwaso applauded his players’ performance, claiming that his side grew into the competition after their opening-match defeat to Algeria.
“We have kept improving each other match,” Byekwaso said, as per Kawowo.
“Our league can not be compared to many of the top leagues and therefore our players are learning and being reminded what to do.”
The Cranes coach went on to thank God not only for the gift of life but also for the efforts of his technical team.

“I thank God for the gift of life. The coaches and the technical docket for the work done. At the start of the tournament, we lost our first game and really it was hurting. We kept on believing, we kept on pushing. Here we are, God has done it, we are leading the group (C) as we await to see whom we face in the quarter finals,” he added.
