Following the Super Eagles' draw with South Africa and their shock loss to Benin in their most recent 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, the Nigerian government has demanded that the Nigeria Football Federation be held accountable for the poor results.

Bafana Bafana and the Cheetahs have ensured that, for the first time in their history, the Super Eagles have now gone four consecutive World Cup qualifiers without a victory in a single qualification campaign.
While a draw with the 1996 African champions may not have caused drastic action to be taken, Nigeria's 2-1 loss to former head coach Gernot Rohr and his Benin side has caused the nation's government to intervene with what is going on at the football federation.
Four matches into their bid to qualify for the biggest FIFA World Cup in history in Mexico, Canada and the United States of America, Nigeria are still yet to register a victory in qualification, and are currently second from bottom of Group C.

Shortly after the defeat to Rohr's charges, Nigeria sports minister John Owan Enoh demanded the NFF provide a detailed report for their poor showings against South African and Benin.
"The recent results are unacceptable," Enoh stated in a press release, as per Sports Village Square.
"Despite the immense support from President [Bola] Tinubu and the high expectations of Nigerian football fans, the Super Eagles have underperformed.

"The NFF must provide a comprehensive technical report explaining the reasons behind this poor showing and give cause why there mustn't be consequences for the disappointment caused both Government and the generality of Nigerians."
