The South African-born coach secured his first win at CHAN when the Harambee Stars picked up a solid 1-0 win against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
McCarthy was happy with the win to kickstart his team's bid to claim the CHAN title, and the former Cape Town City boss admitted that his team can go far in the competition, but only if they can replicate the performance they put in against The Leopards, Pan-Africa Football reported.
"We’ve made a good start, but we have to stay grounded," the 47-year-old said. "There are tough games ahead, but if the boys keep playing like this, we can go far,” he added.
The former FC Porto striker continued: "I’m proud of my team — many of them were stepping onto such a big stage for the first time."
"Beating one of the tournament favourites is massive for us. We were nervous at the start, but once the boys settled, they showed real bravery," McCarthy added.
