Official: Top African League Scraps Relegation

The Egyptian Premier League has officially decided to scrap relegation at the end of the season and here's the reason why this decision was reached.

There will be no relegation from the North African nation’s top division. This decision follows a crucial meeting earlier this week, where clubs fighting to retain their top-flight status voiced their concerns.

According to AfricaSoccer.com, the ruling was influenced by arguments from the affected clubs, who cited fixture congestion and exceptional circumstances that have disrupted the league’s competitive balance. These factors were deemed sufficient reason to cancel demotion to the second division.

This season marked the introduction of a new league format, where the Egyptian Premier League split into a championship and relegation mini-league midway through the campaign. However, the structure appears to have worked against struggling teams, and the league is now set to expand to 21 teams for the 2025/26 season.

Clubs such as Ismaily — Egypt’s first-ever CAF Champions League winners — and El Mahalla will be immediate beneficiaries of the decision. Both are currently bottom of the relegation mini-league and have endured poor form throughout the season.

While the relegation issue has now been resolved, the title race remains alive. Al Ahly and Pyramids FC are still battling for top honours, with just two points separating them. Both sides have one final fixture remaining to conclude their domestic campaigns.
