An Al Ahly star has questioned why Ronwen Williams won the latest CAF Interclub Player of the Year award ahead of himself and Zizo.

At the last CAF Awards in Marrakesh, the South African shot-stopper was the only player on the night to walk away with two prizes, having won the Best Goalkeeper title as well as the accolade for the best player plying their trade on the African continent.
The Mamelodi Sundowns star had a spectacular 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, leading the nation to their first bronze medal in over two decades. However, Egypt international Hussien El Shahat believes that to win the Interclub Player of the Year award, one must win the CAF Champions League — something he and his Al Ahly teammates achieved during the 2023/24 campaign.
He scored five goals during last season’s edition of Africa’s premier club competition and, as a result, believes he should have won it over the Gqeberha native.
"I was supposed to win the award for the best player in Africa, but I was wronged,” the Ahly star said, as per Ebtolat.
“There may have been other factors that contributed to the choice, even though I won four CAF Champions League titles. I was one goal short of being crowned top scorer, and there was a lot of controversy. In the end, a third player won the award after competing with Zizo.
"I was surprised that William entered the competition. It should have been Mostafa Shobeir, as he was more deserving. He and I had a good season, and it was only fair that the competition be between us.

"Zizou also had a good season, but it is common knowledge that whoever wins the award has won the Champions League title, and yet William won it. I was surprised by that and was convinced that I would win the award, because 95% of those who win it, their team has won the championship."
