Riveiro was unexpectedly dismissed after just three months in charge of the Red Devils following a poor FIFA Club World Cup campaign and a slow start to the 2025/26 Egyptian Premier League campaign.
His contract was mutually terminated after a seven-game stint, and the decision raised questions about the Red Devils' leadership and decision-making regarding the appointment of coaches.
According to light-dark.net, the decision to sack Riveiro came after the Planning Committee, club chairman Mahmoud Al-Khatib and Riveiro held a meeting where they thanked the Spaniard for his services but expressed disappointment with the results he achieved.
Riveiro won just one out of his seven games in charge of the Red Giant, and the club maintained that the main reason for his dismissal was that the results did not warrant continuing the ongoing project.
The decision reflects Al Ahly's notoriously high standards for its managers, and the club has not compromised its goals of winning trophies and pleasing fans.
The final nail in Riveiro's coffin was a 2-0 defeat to league rivals Pyramids FC, which left the club in 13th after four games played, and forced the Planning Committee to accelerate its decision to sack the 49-year-old.
