The Benchwarmers Of The Class Of 1996

The Benchwarmers Of The Class Of 1996

As we commemorate the success of South Africa's 1996 Afcon-winning squad, Fan Park takes a look at the benchwarmers of that generation. Did anyone stick out for you?

They may not have played a big part on the field, but they definitely contributed to the success of the team by making sure the players in the starting XI were constantly on their toes.

Daniel Mudau
A prolific goalscorer at club level, "Mambush" faced stiff competition from Shaun Bartlett, Philemon Masinga and Mark Williams in the national team. He only made a single appearance, coming on in the 84th minute for Shaun Bartlett against Ghana in the semi-final.

Helman Mkhalele
The "Midnight Express" started one game and came on as a substitute on three occasions. A crowd favourite at Orlando Pirates, Mkhalele was a pacey player who gave the opposition defenders a torrid time.

John Moeti
For the younger readers who may have not watched "Dungi" play, he was a lot like Kaizer Chiefs' Willard Katsande – tough as nails! Moeti played a cameo role at Afcon , having only come on in the last quarter against Ghana in the penultimate game of the tournament.

David Nyathi
"Going-up", as he was affectionately known, will count himself unlucky after starting the first three games, only to lose his place to Lucas Radebe. The latter was nursing an injury at the beginning of the tournament, but he soon returned to full fitness and Nyathi had to, unfortunately, make way.

His ability to overlap and track back on time made him one of the best left backs this country has ever produced.

Zane Moosa
The dribbling wizard only made one substitute appearance in a 1-0 defeat to Egypt. "Magic Feet" had a bag full of tricks and was a marvel to watch; however, that wasn't enough to convince coach Clive Barker to give him a starting berth.

Augustine Makalakalane
A victim of the "boo boys", Makalakalane was a trend-setter, as he was the first Bafana player to wear white boots. Perhaps the unique colour accentuated the mistakes he made and perhaps that was the reason some fans were constantly on his case.

"Mthakathi", as he was affectionately known, made a substitute appearance in the first game of the tournament, before going on to start the final group game, in which he was taken off in the first half. He also played in Switzerland at the pinnacle of his career.

Other great players of the class of '96 who didn't get any game time include: Andrew Tucker, Edward Motale, John Tlale and Roger De Sa.

Which of these stars deserved more minutes on the pitch?
