Mamelodi Sundowns have officially begun their preparations for the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan, where they will become the first South African team to participate in the tournament. But which South Africans have played in the competition before? Let's take a look!
Quinton Fortune had the pleasure of participating in its inaugural campaign back in 2000 with Manchester United, and he landed up scoring two goals against South Melbourne at the Maracana in Brazil. The Red Devils, however, never progressed beyond the group stage, having secured one win, a loss and a draw.
Six years later, South Africa had two participants in the tournament in the shape of Grant Young and Keryn Jordan. The duo both played for Auckland City, and actually ended up participating in two FIFA Club World Cups.
Last year, Auckland City added another South African to the list of players who have participated in the tournament, and he comes in the shape of Ryan de Vries.
