From Leao To Mhango: Football’s Rap Stars

Rappers want to be ballers and ballers want to be rappers, there's been a recent influx of footballers exploring the hip-hop music scene. Check it out!

What's the story?

Although this isn't a new phenomenon, it's always a shock to see footballers cross over to the music scene.

The likes of Moroka Swallows' Gabadinho Mhango, AC Milan's Rafael Leao and Fulham's Alex Iwobi have all recently dropped some bars.

Let's take a closer look at footballers who rap!

Ballers with a mic

Footballers crossing over to music can be perceived in many different ways, some might look at it as a side hustle for the player, while others acknowledge that it's just a form of creative expression for them.

Regardless of how you may perceive it, the football and music link is becoming more prominent, seeing more players pick up the mic and spit some heat.

We all know about Memphis Depay's exploits in rap and when it comes to European ballers, there's a host of players that have followed his footsteps.

According Sky Italia, Juventus forward Moise Kean released his first single, finally making his entrance into the music game with a track titled, "Outfit" under the name 19fgang.

Kean's song sees him glide on a trap beat in both Italian and English, using his second language mainly for adlibs. Rafael Leao is another Italian-based rapper that's writes rhymes on the side.

The AC Milan star is also on the bilingual tip, rapping in Portuguese and English under the name Way 45. The baller has already released two albums.

In the English Premier League, former Everton teammates Alex Iwobi and Amadou Onana have jumped in the studio to make a song together with Footballer Fits.

The ballers dropped "Hate On Me" on Soundcloud last month, with Onana flexing his unreal vocals on the hook and rapping in French, with Iwobi coming through with the English rap flair.

Locally, the music bug has bitten Moroka Swallows star Gabadinho Mhango, who teased a new track with Malawian artist Goshen Boy, titled "Mr Negative".

The former Buccaneer appears to be going for the stage name; Gaba and the track is sung in the 31-year-old's mother tounge.
