'Benni Is The Right Man For The Job'

A Kenyan tactician believes that the Football Kenya Federation has made the right decision by appointing Benni McCarthy as their new head coach.

During the looming international break, the Capetonian will be leading his own team for the first time in almost three years when he takes charge of the Kenyan national team against Gabon and Gambia.

McCarthy was unveiled as the Harambee Stars' new boss last week, and he has set some lofty expectations for his new side, stating that he hopes to make history with the East African nation by leading them to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

It remains to be seen whether he can successfully accomplish his goals, but former Bandari and KCB coach Bernard Mwalala believes that the FKF have appointed the right coach. In 2022, Mwalala came up against McCarthy's then Cape Town City side, and that match has left an indelible mark on him, as he was impressed by the former striker's attacking approach.

"I remember when I came up against him during my time at Bandari, he set up his team to play attacking football throughout," Mwalala told Mozzart Sport.

"We have also seen him stick to the philosophy in the teams he has managed in South Africa. His players are always comfortable with the ball and play attractive football."

Having been largely successful in Europe as a player, Mwalala also believes that McCarthy's experiences with the likes of Ajax Amsterdam, Celta Vigo, FC Porto, and Blackburn Rovers will hold him in good stead.

"He is the right man for the job. We have secured the services of a man who has played the game and coached at the top level. I have no doubt in my mind that he will improve our fortunes," he added.
