The global showpiece was held for the very first time on African soil in 2010, with South Africa as hosts.

It was a tournament of many firsts, as Spain were crowned world champions for the first time in their history. However, the star of the tournament was not a Spaniard but rather a Uruguayan.

Diego Forlan was undoubtedly the best player; by the competition's end, he had scored five goals, two of which came against Bafana Bafana, and was awarded the Golden Ball prize.

This was part of an illustrious career, which saw him win the 2011 Copa America, the 2002/03 Premier League with Manchester United, and the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League with Atletico Madrid.

He also managed to win the European Golden Shoe twice, in 2004/05 and 2008/09, but now the 45-year-old has taken his talents to a new professional sport. The former striker hung up his boots to pick up a tennis racket.

As a child, it is believed the Montevideo native played tennis alongside football. After participating in amateur masters tennis tournaments for the past five years, he made his pro debut this week at the Uruguay Open.

The former striker played in a doubles match with Federico Coria of Argentina, but unfortunately for the duo, they lost 6-1, 6-2 to Boris Arias and Federico Zeballos in the first round of the ATP's second-tier Challenger Tour, as per ESPN.
