The story

Wydad Athletic Club head coach, Rulani Mokwena has a reputation of being one of the most encyclopedic mentors in the game, with a passion of wanting to learn and improve his approach to coaching and general understanding of football.

In an interview with Forbes Africa, the former Mamelodi Sundowns boss spoke about the football heritage in his family, what sparked his passion for coaching, the clubs he's worked with and the dealing with the trauma of losing his grandmother.

Mokwena also touched on the how technology's role in the future of the game, which could leave behind the coaches that aren't up to speed.

"I understand where society is going, and how AI (artificial intelligence) is going to have a major influence in the future," noted Rulani, emphasising AI's ascendency.

"If you don't give yourself a skill that is beyond replication from an AI perspective, then you become redundant. Society is going to say, 'how can we do things better, more efficiently and more effectively with zero error.' And that is going to happen in football," added the 37-year-old.

Mokwena went on to reveal how he uses GoPro as an aid in his training sessions, stating that it allows him to see what the players see on the pitch:

"In training sessions, I have had the players wear GoPro cameras so that I can see what they see. I put certain demands on them, and I see whether they think about the rules and the action they have to take," explained Rulani, with the young coach sharing an example of how this helped him during his time at Sundowns:

"You get to see how many scans (of the pitch) certain players do in a period of time. A player like (Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder) Rivaldo Coetzee scans four or five times in 15 to 20 seconds before he receives the ball. That allows him to make the right decision almost every single time."
