Manqoba On Modiba: 'I Don't See A Headache'

Manqoba On Modiba: 'I Don't See A Headache'

Aubrey Modiba during the 2025 African Cup of Nations, Qualifier match between South Africa and Uganda at Orlando Stadium on 6 September 2024 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Aubrey Modiba's performances for Bafana Bafana at left back are not causing any headaches for Manqoba Mngqithi, but rather just give the Mamelodi Sundowns coach more reasons to be excited.

Modiba was one of Bafana's standout performers in the two 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Uganda and South Sudan, putting in impressive shifts at left back as the senior national team collected four points in the two matches.

Given freedom to get forward, Modiba was calmness personified when he got into the opposition box, often getting to the byline before spotting a teammate to play the ball to.

At Sundowns, however, the former SuperSport United man has been playing as a midfielder, using his creativity and long range passing to make the Tshwane giants play through the middle.

Mngqithi watched Modiba closely during the two qualifiers for Bafana and is not confused at all on where to play him.

"To be honest, the Aubrey left back situation is not a headache for us. I think it's a big plus because it's not that we have ruled him out of playing at left back. Even in the last match, he came in at left back. We also believe that there is a lot that he gives us even as an eight, so I don't see any headache at this stage because it just depends on the nature of the game and what we want to achieve," Mngqithi told media at a press conference held at Chloorkop on Thursday.

"I was very impressed with his performance and, to be honest, I was not even surprised. He's also very good as a left, but when you have a player who can give you two positions and you are struggling with a lot of left footed midfielders, having someone like Aubrey is a very big advantage in that regard."
