Messi To Play At 2026 WC? Argentina Star Drops Hint

Lionel Messi's Argentina teammate has hinted that the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner could play at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

An Argentina star has hinted that their superstar captain Lionel Messi could potentially be in the team trying to retain their FIFA World Cup title at the next edition of the showpiece.

The diminutive icon made a strong case for being the greatest football player of all time when he finally won the World Cup in 2022.

Since then, there have been questions as to how long he will continue to play for La Albiceleste given that he is now in the latter years of his career.

By the time the next iteration of the world's biggest sporting spectacle arrives, the Rosario native will be 39 years old, but Manchester United centre-back Lisandro Martinez thinks it is possible the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner will play in another international tournament after this year's Copa America.

Argentina have two friendlies before the continental competition begins later this month. Their first will be against Ecuador in the early hours of Monday morning, and speaking ahead of that match, the defender insisted that he does not see Messi calling time on his international career any time soon.

"He's very calm, more than anything he's enjoying the day to day. It's beautiful to be here, we all have a great relationship," Martinez told members of the media, as per Goal.

"When one is here, one is very happy. We feel at home, which is important.

"We don't see it [as his last tournament with Argentina.] We see him happy, and with an impressive level. That's what I can tell you."
