According to the Associated Press, South African-born midfielder Kearyn Baccus was in court in Australia on Thursday following his arrest on 17 May.
The 32-year-old, who joined Macarthur FC on a free transfer in 2022 after leaving Chiefs, is reportedly facing charges "relating to an illegal betting plot to receive yellow cards during A-League matches in return for payment".
Baccus was taken into custody earlier this month, along with Macarthur captain Ulises Davila and central midfielder Clayton Lewis, before being granted bail.
All three footballers have been suspended by Football Australia for allegedly breaching the body's regulations, with two more Macarthur players having since been accused of being involved in the scheme.
Football Australia has since issued a statement to say one of the other two players is currently not being treated as a suspect.
"Football Australia acknowledges the enquiries regarding the potential involvement of other Macarthur FC players in the betting allegations," it read.
"It is important to note that (the player mentioned) is not regarded as a suspect and is currently not under investigation. Football Australia takes these matters seriously and is committed to cooperating fully with the authorities."
The report says that the matter has been under investigation since December of 2023 after "suspicious spot-fixing betting patterns were identified".
Baccus reportedly did not speak when he appeared in the Campbelltown court in Sydney and did not give any indication as to how he would plead.
