Algeria Coach Reacts To Draw With Bafana

Algeria's head coach, Vladimir Petkovic, has reacted to his side's enthralling 3-3 draw with Hugo Broos' South Africa.

The Desert Warriors were forced to come from behind twice in their friendly encounter with Bafana Bafana at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algeria in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Striker Yassine Benzia opened the scoring for the Algerians in the 22nd minute, before a brace from Themba Zwane sent South Africa into the break 2-1 ahead.

Experienced international Yacine Brahimi then equalised for Algeria not long after the restart, before Bafana found themselves in front again in the 66th minute through Iqraam Rayners.

Four minutes later, Benzia pulled the north African giants level again, with neither side able to find the winner in the final 20 minutes.

Speaking after the game, Petkovic bemoaned his side's defensive errors.

"The majority of the goals we conceded during the two matches came from defensive errors," he said, according to La Vague Verte

"If we had been more focused, we could have avoided them.

"I knew from the start that there was great offensive potential in the team. It's clear that we have to work on the defensive aspect. We have to make sure that the whole block has to work and not just the defenders."

The former Switzerland boss then admitted he felt bad he could not give opportunities to all of his players.

"It's a shame that I didn't give everyone the opportunity to play but it was difficult because there were around 30 of us," he added.

"It will be really difficult to choose the 23 players in June [for their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers]. We had time to try."
