Grant Kekana's Mom: 'He Took One For The Country'

Grant Kekana's Mom: 'He Took One For The Country'

Deputy Minister in the Presidency Pinky Kekana expressed her pride for her son's performance against Nigeria in Bafana's Africa Cup of Nations semi-final loss.

Check it out!

What's the story?

Grant Kekana's mother, who is the Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Pinky Kekana revealed how pride she is of her son's performance against Nigeria on Wednesday.

Kekana was unfortunate enough to get a red card during extra-time in Bafana's loss to the Super Eagles, with fans and now his mother, showing their appreciation for the defender taking one for the team.

Let's take a closer look...

Deputy Minister Kekana praises her son

Deputy Minister Pinky Kekana attended the State of the Nation Address by President Cyril Ramaphosa at the Cape Town City Hall, where she was asked about her son, Grant's performance at AFCON against Nigeria.

During the 115th minute in extra time, Grant Kekana brought down Super Eagles striker Terem Moffi just outside the box. It resulted in a dangerous freekick for Nigeria and the referee sending off Kekana after consulting with VAR.

If Kekana didn't make a last ditch attempt to win the ball back from Moffi, who in a one-on-one situation with Ronwen Williams, the game might've not gone to penalties.

It was one of those "take one for the team" challenges from the Mamelodi Sundowns star, with his mother saying he sacrificed himself for more than just his Bafana teammates.

"I'm proud of him, that's why I'm in peace, I'm in my white..." said the Deputy Minister who added:

"He took one, not for the team, but for South Africa." Watch below:

She later reiterated her point on the SONA red carpet:

Unfortunately for Kekana, he'll miss Bafana Bafana's 3rd-Place Playoff against the DR Congo on Saturday evening. The straight red card against Nigeria certainly didn't mare what's been a top campaign for the ex-SuperSport United man.

The 31-year-old and his Sundowns teammates in Bafana's defensive unit helped the team keep four consecutive clean sheets at this year's AFCON!

After his solid display against Nigeria, which ended being his last game of this year's tournament, Kekana received mass praise for his efforts from fans on social media.
