Former Al Ahly Boss Claims Sundowns Are The Best In Africa

Former Al Ahly and TP Mazembe manager Patrice Carteron has claimed that Mamelodi Sundowns are currently the best club on the African continent.

Masandawana have been prominent figures within African football for close to a decade and while they have only the 2015/16 CAF Champions League title to show for it, many could argue that they sit at the summit of the continent's club football today in 2023.

Downs managed to get their hands on their third piece of continental silverware earlier this month when they were crowned champions of the first-ever African Football League campaign.

The South African outfit has seemingly impressed many with their performances, with Carteron being among them.

Speaking after the DStv Premiership champions were nominated among the final five clubs who are up for the 2023 CAF Men's Club of the Year award, the Frenchman says he would give the prize to the Tshwane-based side following their victorious campaign in Africa's new competition.

"Sundowns played a very wonderful tournament in the African Super League and won the title well-deservedly," the 53-year-old told Btolat.

Rulani Mokwena's charges defeated Petro Atletico de Luanda, Al Ahly and Wydad Athletic Club on their way to winning the AFL, all of whom have defeated Sundowns in recent Champions League campaigns.

TP Mazembe was another team that took part in the competition and during his spell in charge of the Ravens, Carteron was able to eliminate Downs from the Champions League in 2015.
