CAF 'Increase' African Football League Prize Money

CAF's new African Football League competition is now reportedly set to become the continent's most lucrative tournament following an increase in its prize money.

Earlier this month, news emerged regarding how much the clubs taking part in the continent's newest showpiece would be earning for their involvement.

When CAF president Dr. Patrice Motsepe officially announced the competition's inception, he stated that its purpose was to generate more funds for teams in Africa and, according to YallaKora, it seems the South African executive is staying true to his word.

At the beginning of September, news came out claiming that the winner of the newly introduced contest would receive a total of $2 million (R38 million).

However, the aforementioned Egyptian publication has now reported that the Italian company tasked with orchestrating the AFL will now award $4 million (R76 million) to the winners of the first-ever edition of the competition.

The increase in prize money involves all the teams participating, too, with the runners-up said to be set to receive $2.8 million (R53 million). Those who make it to the final four will get $1.7 million (R32 million), while all the teams involved will receive $900 000 (R17 million) at the quarter-final stage.

The clubs who will be taking part are CAF Champions League champions Al Ahly, record Premier Soccer League champions Mamelodi Sundowns, Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club, Nigerian powerhouse Enyimba, four-time African title holders Esperance de Tunis, Democratic Republic of Congo's TP Mazembe, Tanzania's Simba and Petro de Luanda of Angola.

The same report claims that the eight teams met the 12 September deadline to confirm their participation as kick-off to what is now set to be the continent's most lucrative competition draws closer.
