Stan On Rayners Contract Clause: I Am Not Sorry About It

SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews has explained that Stellenbosch FC are yet to make a payment for the transfer of Iqraam Rayners, which is why there was a clause for him not to play against Matsatsantsa earlier this week.

Th clause in the striker's contract kept him out of the clash on Tuesday and Matthews gave some insight into their decision. And in the form Rayners is in at the moment, SuperSport might have dodged a bullet by ensuring that he does not play against them.

Since making a move to Stellenbosch, Rayners has been scoring at an incredible rate, scoring 15 goals in 11 matches.

"Stellenbosch couldn't give me all the money that I wanted for the player. In terms of our agreement with them and the payment plan that they could kind of accommodate towards me, was paying the player off over time. Up to now, I have not received one cent for the transfer of Rayners because they asked for some time before they could make their first payment," Matthews explained to media after the club announcement a partnership with Huawei in Randburg on Thursday night.

"The reality was that I was basically, in a way, doing a favour for Stellenbosch, to give them a player before they had the capacity to pay for him. I didn't feel it was fair to be doing that and then having the player play against me when I am effectively subsidising some of his move. So, that was the reason that we put that clause in the contract. I am not sorry about it. If Stellenbosch had paid me upfront, there would have been no conditions attached. But I understand what it's like to be a smaller club that can't afford to pay. There are many times when I wish I could get payment terms.

"So, I felt comfortable about doing the deal with them. I also know where I got Iqraam from. I signed him on a free from Stellenbosch and I genuinely believed it was the right club for him to go back to. They play him in a way that suits his playing style. He does not have to track back. He is allowed a free role upfront to do as he pleases and that suits Iqraam's style."
