Man Utd Denied Second Spot By Palace Late Stunner

Man Utd Denied Second Spot By Palace Late Stunner

Manchester United missed the chance to move second on the Premier League table after Crystal Palace's superb late equaliser on Wednesday night.

Premier League

Result: Crystal Palace 1-1 Manchester United

Date: 18 January 2023

Venue: Selhurst Park

Erik ten Hag handed a debut to loan signing Wout Weghorst in the attack, with Anthony Martial missing out. Casemiro was also kept in the line-up despite being one yellow card away from a one-match suspension.

The game's first opening arrived on 16 minutes when Aaron Wan-Bissaka's cross found Luke Shaw at the far post, but the full-back's effort sailed just wide of the mark

United managed to carve out another chance seven minutes later when Antony got on the end of Casemiro's long pass and spotted Vicente Guaita off his line, although his attempted lob sailed into the side-netting.

Palace had been quiet for most of the half but they nearly pulled ahead on 40 minutes through Odsonne Édouard's powerful effort from the edge of the box which forced goalkeeper David de Gea into a superb save.

The visitors got the breakthrough three minutes later when a neat passing move ended with Christian Eriksen teeing up Bruno Fernandes who took one touch before firing into the far corner,

The Eagles responded with their first change ten minutes into the second half, with Jean-Philippe Mateta making way for the tricky Eberechi Eze.

Ten Hag looked to his bench with 25 minutes left on the clock, with Weghorst and Antony making way for Scott McTominay and Alejandro Garnacho.

De Gea came to United's rescue in the 75th minute with a fine one-handed save to keep out Marc Guehi's header from a corner as Palace upped the tempo.

The bad news for Ten Hag and Casemiro arrived with ten minutes left, as the Brazilian midfielder picked up a yellow card and he will now miss Sunday's big clash against Arsenal.

With four minutes left to play, Palace got their equaliser in spectacular fashion as Michael Olise found the back of the net with a superb free-kick, which earned the home side a point, leaving United in third spot.
