Senegal Set To Lose Head Coach After World Cup Exit?

Senegal Set To Lose Head Coach After World Cup Exit?

Having enjoyed a brilliant 2022, it seems the year could end on a sour note for Senegal, with reports suggesting that the head coach of the African champions is poised to resign.

Footballer Faces Execution For 'Killing' Officials

According to Senegal's Daily Record, the head coach of the Lions of Teranga, Aliou Cisse, could be leaving his role as national team head coach.

The news comes after the west African giants were knocked out of the FIFA World Cup by England in the round of 16 after suffering a 3-0 defeat, although they did manage to outdo their 2018 group stage exit in Russia.

Senegal have come a long way under Cisse, with their journey being rewarded with African football's biggest prize, the Africa Cup of Nations trophy, at the beginning of the year.

Under the 46-year-old, the nation is able to refer to themselves as African champions for the very first time in their history.

The same report suggests that Cisse is currently pondering his future after exiting the World Cup. Despite AFCON glory and progression from the group stage in Qatar, it seems the former midfielder feels he has taken the west Africans as far as he can.

Should he leave his role, he will be added to the long list of managers who left their jobs after exiting the World Cup, which includes the likes of Luis Enrique, Roberto Martinez, Tite and fellow west African Otto Addo.
