Footballer Faces Execution For ‘Killing’ Officials

A footballer from Iran is reportedly on the verge of being executed after he was alleged to have killed three police officers.

Iranian footballer Amir Nasr-Azadani is facing the death penalty after the Islamic Republic's judicial system ruled that the 26-year-old should be hanged for allegedly being involved in the killing of three members of the military during nationwide protests.

Protests have been taking place all over the country following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody in September. Amini was said to have been detained by police for allegedly breaking the rules around the wearing of head coverings by women in the country.

Speaking to IranWire, Nasr-Azadani's family has admitted that while the Iranjavan FC player did participate in protests, he did nothing more than chant a few slogans for a few hours.

A member of the family has also revealed that they have been harassed by the government to not speak out on the arrest of their loved one. It is said that if they do, the defender's execution will be final.

It is further claimed that Nasr-Azadani was not near the area in which those government officials were killed.

FIFPRO, the worldwide representative organisation for professional footballers, tweeted on Monday night: "FIFPRO is shocked and sickened by reports that professional footballer Amir Nasr-Azadani faces execution in Iran after campaigning for women's rights and basic freedom in his country.

"We stand in solidarity with Amir and call for the immediate removal of his punishment."
