Poland captain Robert Lewandowski has revealed what he told Lionel Messi after his foul on the Argentina skipper led to an on-field altercation between the two superstars at the 2022 FIFA World Cup on Wednesday.
Messi Makes Unwanted FIFA World Cup History!
Towards the end of the South Americans' 2-0 victory over Poland, the Pole was seen trying to shake hands with the seven-time Ballon d'Or, only for the 35-year-old to seemingly reject his attempts at making up.
Moments earlier, Lewandowski fouled Messi by tugging his shirt as the Paris Saint-Germain superstar tried to take on him with a dribble, with cameras capturing the pair in conversation after the final whistle.
While Messi insisted in a post-match interview that he would not reveal what was said, Lewandowski has suggested that he tried to explain to his opponent that he was forced to play a more defensive role for his country against the Albiceleste.
"We talked a little, had fun," the Barcelona striker said, as per the Daily Mail.
"I told Messi that I played more defensively than usual – but something like that is sometimes necessary for the team."
Referring to his foul on Messi, he continued: "This is very rare, yes: Me in the defensive midfield. But I knew I had to help the team."
Despite losing to Group C winners Argentina, Poland advanced from the group ahead of Mexico on goal difference.
