Zwane: All Not Lost For Tower At Chiefs

Despite not featuring in a league match for Kaizer Chiefs this season, Arthur Zwane says there could still be a role for one of the club's longest serving members, Eric Mathoho, to play.Read:  Rulani On Kermit Spat: I Didn't Deserve That

Mathoho, who was restored to the Chiefs starting XI by virtue of being voted in by the fans in the Carling Black Label Cup, vindicated his selection on the day.

The 32-year-old looked sharp and solid in the heart of defence for Chiefs, undeterred by his lack of game-time this season, something that has left his coach impressed.

"To be quite honest, it's a bit difficult because the selection becomes more tougher and tougher. You look at how Tower played today [Saturday] and look back he hasn't played this season and he went in there and led by example. He is one of our seniors as well. I'm also happy but it tells you what I said in terms of the discipline and dedication and commitment from our boys, which is very key for us," Zwane told journalists about the veteran defender.

Tower, as Mathoho is affectionately known, is currently Chiefs' fourth-choice centre-back behind Zitha Kwinika, Siyabonga Ngezana and Njabulo Ngcobo.

"There is competition for places. We'll always look for the best central pairing that can also be able to give us the balance when it comes to our full-backs because we also want to attack as a team," Zwane added.

The 2022/23 season is the lowest in terms of appearances for the towering defender since joining Chiefs in 2012, though it remains to be seen whether he manages to pick up more minutes in the second half of the season.
