A former Al Ahly star has reflected on his time in the Egyptian capital and given a harsh verdict on the period he spent with Pitso Mosimane, slamming the South African tactician.
New Al Ahly Coach: I Want To Win Everything
Saleh Gomaa spent five seasons wearing the famous Red Devils strip. Highly touted to achieve great things at the Club of the Century, Gomaa failed to build on what looked a promising start to his Al Ahly career.
According to Transfermarkt, Gomaa made a positive impression during his first season with the club in the 2015/16 campaign, scoring two goals and providing seven assists in the Egyptian Premier League. However, the attacking midfielder's numbers never reached those heights again.
Despite this, he did manage to hold the league title aloft on five occasions, and also won the Egyptian Cup with the record African champions before leaving the club for Ceramica Cleopatra FC in December 2020.
During his time in Cairo, the 29-year-old played under the tutelage of both Rene Weiler and Mosimane, and in a recent interview, he gave his thoughts on the pair, first praising the Swiss before going on to slam his South African counterpart.
"When Weiler came to Al Ahly, he excluded me from the team squad and asked me to train at the gym. I said no and that was the start of my problem," Gomaa told ONTime Sports
"Weiler is a very good coach, he's better than Mosimane.
"Mosimane was luckier but I think he's deceptive. If Weiler stayed as long as Pitso, did he would have won the same titles.
"I expected Samy Komsan to be Al Ahly's head coach after the departure of Mosimane, he's loved by everyone."
'We Would Love Ronaldo In Our League'
The Egypt international played under Mosimane for only two months before being shipped out to his current club Cleopatra, while the Kagiso native went on to lead Al Ahly to their ninth and 10th CAF Champions League trophies.
