It is Thursday again, and, as usual, Supporters Club takes you down memory lane. Remember the 1994 BP Top 8 final between Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns?
What a game that was! The grass always suffers whenever these two clubs meet. Both teams had a number of star players in their stables – Sundowns had the likes of Sizwe "SOS" Motaung, Lucky "Osh kosh" Molefe, Johannes "Bricks" Mudau, Phil "Chippa" Masinga, Daniel "Mambush" Mudau and Ernest "Wire" Chirwali, while Chiefs could call on stars such as Neil "Mokoko" Tovey, Lucas "Rhoo" Radebe, Doctor "16V" Khumalo, Thabo "Tsiki-tsiki" Mooki, Brian Baloyi and Wedson Nyirenda.
The game took place at a packed FNB Stadium, and it was Sundowns who drew first blood through the late Motaung. Nyirenda equalised for Amakhosi, though, after connecting with a fine cross from Ntsie Maphike. However, Daniel Mudau put the Brazilians ahead again when he headed in a cross from Chippa Masinga. Not to be outdone, Nyirenda levelled matters again, heading in a long pass from Tovey.
Both teams were pushing for the winner when Chiefs goalkeeper Baloyi pulled off the save of the day as he parried Daniel Mudau's close-range header over the crossbar. Bennet Masinga then had a goal disallowed by the assistant referee when he was judged to be offside.
Just when everybody thought the game was going to extra-time, Zambian midfielder Mike Maringa scored a late winner for Amakhosi.
Chiefs won the game 3- 2, and were crowned the 1994 BP Top 8 champions!
What are your memories of that game?
