In a heartfelt glimpse behind the scenes of one of South Africa’s most promising footballers, Relebohile Mofokeng's mother, Naomi, has opened up about the emotional sacrifice that helped set her son on the path to stardom.
As featured in adidas’ new ‘Plus One Effect’ campaign, which tells the stories of athletes and the crucial role their supporters play in shaping their journeys, the spotlight has turned to the 20-year-old Orlando Pirates winger and the family love that continues to fuel his rise.
Mofokeng’s story is one of raw talent, humble beginnings, and unwavering parental support. Raised in Soweto, the left-footed playmaker has quickly become a fan favourite at the Buccaneers, dazzling with his pace, composure and creativity. But his journey wasn’t always smooth.
According to his mother, the most difficult decision came long before his professional debut — when she sent him to boarding school at the age of 13 in pursuit of better football opportunities.
“The hardest decision I ever made was sending Rele to boarding school when he was just 13,” Naomi said.
“He could’ve stayed in our kasi and gone to a local school, but I knew the right opportunities were further away. I only saw him once a month for five years. It broke me, but it is a sacrifice I had to make so he could have a better future.”

Rele, who came through the SAFA Transnet School of Excellence before being scouted by Orlando Pirates in 2022, credits his family as his biggest source of strength. He made his senior debut in his first season and has since also earned national caps for Bafana Bafana.
“Having both my parents by my side is a privilege,” Rele said. “They motivate and encourage me, and they’ve always believed in me - through the wins and the losses. I want to make them proud, because they’ve always been there for me, and I’ll always be there for them.”
Now in his second season with Pirates and showing maturity beyond his years, Mofokeng remains grounded. His mother’s words continue to echo in his mind:
“When you know where you come from, you know where you’re going.”
