The MTN8 game between current league champions Mamelodi Sundowns and defending champions Platinum Stars last Saturday saw strange visitors on the day, a swarm of bees.
The bees gathered in the boom microphone behind Dikwena goalkeeper, Siyabonga Mpontshane and the officials had to stop the game for about 10 minutes for them to removed.
To most footballers and commentators, the sight was something different and to some spectators, it was a scary visit. A visit by the bees could have various meanings, it could be read that they were attracted by the hosts' jersey colour (yellow).
The Siya crew put up a call to Sundowns legend, Joel Masilela, he revealed that he never saw bees in a football match in his career.
"I've never seen bees flocking or visiting during the game except that they just passed by as we were training during my days as a Sundowns player. I don't know really the significance but that could be a visit by ancestors. Well, we lost the game on Saturday but I don't believe that could mean our season is not going to be a smooth one. I want to believe we'll have a beautiful one as Sundowns and the visit was just a confirmation because they were not angry or sting anyone. On the other hand, the climate is changing daily and could be the cause of the visit," said Fire.
Although one of the seasoned football commentators, Mark Gleeson, took to Twitter to express shock over the insects, he said he never saw them in a game.
"In all my years. I have never seen bees like that at a game? Never," reads the tweet @markgleesonfoot.
According to the Dikwena coach, Allan Freese, the meaning of the visit could be tricky but it wasn't the first time he spotted them.
"I think that wasn't our home game and I can't tell you the meaning of the visit by the insects. They could be attracted by the colour of the jerseys. Sometimes it could be nature, we can't always have interpretation of mother-nature, however, it was Sundowns game. I can't know really because they're all over the show," said Freese.
Perhaps as a football follower or spectator you've spotted bees during the game before , what could be the significance of the insects? Could it be translated to bad or good luck?
