Tshepo Matete Could Face Questions Over Previous Club

Baroka FC's signing of YouTube sensation, Tshepo Matete, could come back to haunt them with news emerging that the skilful player didn't notify his current employers about his previous ABC Motsepe League club, FC Kathorus. Read: Matete Reveals How He Joined Baroka FC 'Skhwama Sama Tariyana' as the player is known in local football circles, who was registered with an affidavit, was pulled from Bakgaga's squad list just before they took to the field against African Warriors following news from Johannesburg that one of his old player cards had been discovered. Warriors' administrative manager, Tsholedi Moloi, said, "We objected to them using Matete. For me an affidavit is not enough to register a player in the professional ranks. There are processes that you need to follow, like going to the local FA and SAFA. "Although Baroka CEO Morgan Mammila told me that he believed the player was properly registered, a decision was made to exclude him. It's bad for Baroka… very bad… because they now could lose everything," Moloi told the Siya crew. "I also told him that a player of Matete's calibre cannot just come from participating in tournaments. He must have played for another club but didn't tell Baroka," Moloi added. Matete has so far featured on nine occasions for the NFD log leaders, something that could open a can of worms, with another NFD outfit possibly having lodged an official complaint with the PSL on the player. A source said, "Matete told everyone that he'd never played for a club, but where did he learn those skills? In 2013/14 he was registered with Kathorus. It's ridiculous! Being an alleged defaulter, he misled the whole nation, including Baroka, but why did they go to a police station for an affidavit instead of looking for his proper records? "The rules are very clear – the last team you played for must be written on your registration form. It can't say 'none'." When asked for comment, Bakgaga CEO Mammila denied 'Skhwama' ever donning Kathorus colours. "He never played for that team," he told the Siya crew. Meanwhile, the PSL's Communications Manager, Lux September, was not prepared to comment on the issue.
