Recently, both SAFPU and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) indicated that there is a possibility that they will rally the players to strike and campaign for minimum wages in the industry, among other issues.

Speaking to the Siya crew, SAFPU's stand-in president Tebogo Monyai has spoken about some of the suggestions for PSL and NFD players.

"We recently ran a survey with the players through our mother body Cipro (Companies and Intellectual Property Commission) to see what they think the minimum wage should be for them in the PSL and NFD respectively. The survey was done randomly with different players from different clubs.

"The results of the survey from about 95 percent of the players showed that they suggested about R18 000 minimum monthly salary for NFD and R35 000 for the PSL. Now you ask yourself, is it that realistic? Is that possible?

"Obviously the club owners might have their suggestions on that. We understand that for them it is business, but we have to tell them that it's something that has come up in our research. If we don't agree on that, we would like a situation where we would sit down with clubs and work on a possible solution," said Monyai.
