SAFA Speak On Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana Presidency Run

The South African Football Association has cleared the air regarding the media reports that have indicated that the former vice-president of the association Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana will be running for the SAFA presidency.

It was reported by various media publications recently that Nonkonyana was planning to run for the SAFA top office by contesting for the March elections where current SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan is expected to be re-elected as President.

However, SAFA has rubbished such reports claiming that Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana is not even eligible to run for the positions within SAFA, following his suspension and eventual dismissal from the FA back in 2014. For him to reconsider, he needs to appeal his case successfully and have the congress overturn his ban.

Speaking to Soccer Laduma, SAFA National Executive Member Mzwandile Maforvane, explained that the Chief is not eligible to run for the SAFA Presidency as due process regarding any possible reinstatement had not been followed.

"The Chief is not eligible for the SAFA Presidency, it is as simple as that. Proper processes have not been followed. If the Chief has to be reinstated back into SAFA then all the SAFA regions would have to be in agreement and his reinstatement can only happen at a National Congress of SAFA NEC member," said Maforvane.

The SAFA NEC member further went on to inform the crew that Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana owes the association funds in excess of R900 000, which stems from his court interdicts and legal action taken following his sacking.
