Mngqithi Came Close To Joining African Giants

The identity of the club that experienced coach Manqoba Mngqithi came close to joining has been revealed as the mentor still ponders his next move.

Mngqithi has been without a club since he was relieved of his duties at Mamelodi Sundowns in December despite having managed to guide the defending champions to the top of the table. They were also still in contention of progressing during the CAF Champions League group stage at the time.

While the 53-year-old tactician has been linked with a few clubs locally and abroad, he has appeared to have decided to take his time before deciding on his next move, having openly said that his next role should be at a team that is eager to achieve big, with an ambition to win the League.

According to sources, Mngqithi had been seriously considered for a role at Sudanese giants Al-Merrikh SC before the club settled for former Orlando Pirates and Uganda national team coach Milutin Sredojevic.

"He might not be the one to make the headlines week in and week out and all of that, but Manqoba is a coach that is well respected and on the radar of many clubs on the continent because of his experience and achievements over the years. Al-Merrikh SC became the latest club in Africa to show interest in his services although in the end they decided to appoint Micho (Sredojevic) to replace Giovanni Solinas as their head coach," said the source.

Mngqithi has been using his free time to good effect by helping with his knowledge in the development of young talent, having recently been spotted in KwaZulu-Natal where he is trusted to unearth untapped talent in the local communities.
