Mokwena Backs Sirino For Bafana

Mokwena Backs Sirino For Bafana

Mamelodi Sundowns' head coach Rulani Mokwena says Gaston Sirino's possible inclusion for Bafana Bafana should not even be a discussion provided he has the correct documentation to do so.

Since joining the Brazilians, the 32-year-old has been one of the side's standout players despite falling out with the team over a possible move to Al Ahly two seasons ago.

Mokwena was quizzed about the eligibility of the Uruguayan who is available for selection for Bafana Bafana, given the fact that he has spent more than five years in the country since his move to Sundowns in 2018.

"If he has the things [necessary paperwork] he is valuable of course. Unfortunately, I don't select the national team, that's the hardest thing. [There's] so many good players in this country, so I don't even think if there is a good player available it should be a discussion," Mokwena told journalists after his side's goalless draw against Swallows FC.

Meanwhile Sirino too has opened the door to representing Bafana Bafana and has left it up to coach Hugo Broos as to whether he selects him or not.

"I have had a great time in this beautiful country, I love everything about it and if I get presented with the chance to don the national team colours I would jump at the opportunity, but the decision does not rest with me. There is no player born in South America who has played for Bafana Bafana and if I receive the call, I would be happy to represent this beautiful nation", Sirino told the Sundowns magazine.
