Nedbank Cup Final Key Battles

Nedbank Cup Final Key Battles

Makhehlene Makhaula, left, is expected to battle it out with Chiefs' Thabo Cele in midfield.

A few days before the highly Nedbank Cup final between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, Soccer Laduma looks at the key battles that could go a long way in deciding who lifts the trophy at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Amakhosi are determined to end the season on a high and avenge last weekend's defeat to the Buccaneers in the league, while Pirates want to give Jose Riveiro a sweet send off by winning a third consecutive Nedbank Cup title.

Thabo Cele v Makhehlene Makhaula

The midfield is where there's always the most interest. Cele started on the bench in the derby last weekend, but could get an opportunity to start in midfield, which means an interesting battle on the cards with Makhaula, who has a never-say-die attitude. Makhaula has proven to be a workhorse and his presence will be important to ensure Cele does not play his normal game. Cele enjoys having the ball at his feet and he's got good vision to open up the opposition defence, which is where Makhaula's defensive skills will need to be on point to stop any passes that the Chiefs midfielder players into dangerous areas.

Inacio Miguel v Evidence Makgopa

After Bradley Cross was sent off in the last derby, Amakhosi are expected to make a few changes at the back. Edmilson Dove, who played as a left-sided centre back in the last match, looks set to play at left back, meaning Inacio Miguel could get to start for the first time since returning from injury. The Angolan defender would need to take care of Makgopa, who was on the scoresheet at FNB Stadium. Makgopa tends to rise to the occasion against Chiefs, using his movement off the ball to unsettle defenders.

Dillan Solomons v Relebohile Mofokeng

Mofokeng started in a more central role over the weekend, but was more effective when he moved out to the left side of attack in the second half. This gave Amakhosi right back Dillan Solomons a lot more to think about defensively because of Mofokeng's trickery both on and off the ball. Solomons enjoys using his pace to get forward, but could be restricted if he does not keep Mofokeng quiet, so he has a big job to do to ensure he is effective both in defence and attack.
