Kaizer Chiefs' rising star, Simphiwe Mtsweni, remains perhaps something of an unknown quantity to the Glamour Boys faithful. This is despite putting on a very encouraging performance at left-back when he made his debut in the Caf Champions League recently.
It appears the 20-year-old could be set for a prolonged spell in Chiefs' first-11 as Tsepo Masilela is still returning to full match fitness, following an injury he picked up. Jimmy Jambo is also not available for selection as he continues his rehabilitation for a serious knee injury.
Keegan Ritchie's departure for Europe also means Mtsweni is likely to see more game-time in the left-back slot for the club. In addition, the young star recently opened up to the club's official website about where and how his development as a player began with Chiefs.
He said, " I was born 20 years ago and bred in Embalenhle, Mpumalanga. My father saw my love for soccer at my tender age as I used to play soccer at school, but now I want to complete my Grade 12. I am on my way to register for my Grade 12 as I am speaking to you now. Education is important in life, so I have to continue with my studies. I am very shy but confident. That's how I have been growing up. I have a humble background but was taught at an early age to have courage with respect."
The defender added, "Apart from being a God fearing person, Farouk Khan from the Stars of Africa Academy has helped me a lot. He taught me a lot about soccer. I am also an ambitious person and get motivated always when I get a chance to play. I am eager to learn and with Tsepo Masilela and Coach Baxter around, I am prepared to learn more. I also do extra training after hours when we don't have a game. I go to the gym to do the extra work most of the time.I was a 100 and 800m athlete at school. I represented Mpumalanga in the Provincial competitions."
