Doctor Khumalo Remembers When Bafana Faced Germany In 1995...

It was South Africa's first meeting with Germany after they returned to the international scene and a game in which Clive Barker told Doctor Khumalo to 'Go out there and dance'. Read: SA's Golden Boot Race Has A New Leader After nearly two decades of isolation due to Apartheid, Bafana Bafana took to the field for the first time in 1992 when they beat Cameroon 1-0 in Durban.
A few years later they would go on to win the African Cup of Nations on home soil in 1996, but they were showing their promise plenty of time before that tournament took place. Speaking in his 'Chillin' with Doc' column in this week's issue of Soccer Laduma, '16V' recalls a game against the Germans where Barker told the Kaizer Chiefs legend to step up to the plate. He said, "There was a game we played against Germany at Johannesburg Stadium and we were under so much pressure, with the likes of Andreas Moller, Jurgen Klinsman and the other big names all over us. Fifteen minutes into the game, Clive called me to the technical area and said, "Doc you're the man who is going to take this game to the Germans. Go out there and dance." "The first touch after that chat, I put the ball through a German defender's legs and the crowd went mental. We were on top of the Germans and they couldn't believe how dramatically things had changed." Bafana went on to draw 0-0 with the team that, the following year, went on to be crowned champions of Europe, with South Africa's footballing pedigree growing month on month at that stage. The South African national team have faced Germany three times since that game in 1995, losing all three matches. Read Khumalo's full column in the latest issue of Soccer Laduma.
