What Happened To Mahlangu’s La Liga Move

In this week’s Soccer Laduma, May Mahlangu has explained why his move to La Liga outfit, Elche, fell through at the last minute, leading to him signing in Turkey.

The Siya crew broke the news earlier this week that the 25-year-old had signed for Turkish Super Lig outfit, Torku Konyaspor, with it later being revealed that he had only put pen to paper on a short-term deal for six months.

Now, speaking to Soccer Laduma, Mahlangu has explained why he didn’t move to one of Europe’s top leagues as expected, and what happened that led to him joining Konyaspor.

Mahlangu said, “By the end of October, I had interest from a club in England, two Dutch clubs, two La Liga clubs and a big club in Greece. I chose to sign a pre-contract with a la Liga club, Elche CF, and as you probably know, La Liga is ranked as the number one league in the world by UEFA.

“Everything was set for me to start with Elche in January. I had passed a medical, I had seen the facilities and I’d met the people from the club. I was really excited and proud to be the only South African playing in La Liga.

“It was incredibly bad luck and the most disappointing story of my career. A few days before the transfer window opened in January, I was informed by the club that the Spanish League had placed transfer embargoes on a number of professional clubs due to their economic state. Elche and the other club that was interested in signing me were both amongst the clubs banned from signing players in the January transfer window.

“It was a devastating blow because the reason I felt that I needed to rest my Achilles tendon in November was that I knew the demands of the second round of La Liga would be physically intense, especially if I was selected to also participate in the African Nations Cup finals.”
