Downs’ R6 Million Mohomi Transfer Explained

Mamelodi Sundowns are believed to have paid a whopping R6 million for the capture of Lucky Mohomi from Free State Stars.

As reported on the Soccer Laduma web and mobi-site, Sundowns have secured the services of Mohomi, beating Orlando Pirates to his signature.

The midfielder attracted interest from the PSL’s big guns following his impressive performances for Ea Lla Koto in the 2015/16 season.

The 25-year-old exceeded expectations this past campaign as he took the PSL by storm and cemented his place as one of Stars' most outstanding performances in his first campaign in the top-flight.

The Mamelodi-born player had two years remaining on his contract with Stars, having signed a three-year deal when he joined the club from Garankuwa United last year, but Downs opted to buy him out of his deal.

According to sources, Stars received a R6 million offer from Sundowns for Mohomi’s services, with the player leaving Bethlehem for Chloorkop on a three-year deal.

“Lucky Mohomi was seen with his parents at Mamelodi Sundowns. The player was spotted at the Sundowns headquarters in Chloorkop, together with his mother and father. He has signed a five-year deal with Sundowns. It’s a straight three-year deal plus an option of two years to extend,” said the source.

Contacted for comment, the player’s agent Abbie Rasimphi told the Siya crew that he wasn’t aware of the finalisation of the deal at the time of going to print.

However, a reliable source close to Mohomi told the Siya crew that the player made the decision to sign with Downs in the presence of his parents because his agent was in Durban. Mohomi is expected to meet with his agent later in the week to inform him of the details of his move.

“Mohomi will be meeting with his agent this week to inform him about what happened regarding his move to Sundowns. He made the decision that he wants to play for Sundowns and that’s why he signed a contract with the club. He will explain all of that to his agent when they meet. I don’t think there will be any issues between him and his agent. The agent will have to understand that it was a big opportunity that he couldn’t miss,” explained the source.

Mohomi is viewed as a replacement for former Sundowns midfielder Bongani Zungu, who will be turning out for Portuguese outfit Vitoria de Guimaraes FC in the 2016/17 season.
