£50m Transfer Kitty For Struggling Moyes

The English football media is reporting that David Moyes will be backed in the transfer market by Manchester United owners, the Glazer family, in January.

The pre-season transfer window was a shambles for the Red Devils, with failed bids for a host of players, and only Marouane Fellaini arriving over the odds.

The reigning Premier League champions have subsequently slipped to their worst start to a league campaign since 1989, with just seven points from six games so far.

As a result, it is believed that the Glazers have given Moyes a £50 million assurance that new players can arrive in January.

Athletic Bilbao midfielder, Ander Herrera, who was linked to United on transfer deadline day in mysterious circumstances, is back on their radar.

But they will have to break their club record £30 million transfer fee to sign him, after Bilbao refused to consider selling for anything less than his €36 million buyout clause.

Everton left-back Leighton Baines also remains a key United transfer target, and Moyes could return to his old club with a less insulting bid for the England international than the one the Toffees rejected outright.

The hefty war chest that Moyes has been promised is not intended to suggest a crisis is afoot at Old Trafford, even after the manager admitted more painful defeats could come, and that the club could even be eliminated from the group stage of the Champions League.

Instead, United have inferred that they always knew Moyes’ first transfer window, and indeed season, could be tricky, that all of their English rivals have strengthened, and that their own squad contains a growing number of ageing players.

Meanwhile, as United already begin to plot their January reinforcements, it has been left to young defender, Alex Buttner, to raise the spirits following their weekend capitulation to West Brom at the Theatre of Dreams.

"We have lost three games but we have to focus in every game and we have to fight in every game to win," he said.

"We are not in crisis.

“Of course the crowd wants to see Manchester United winning – and the players as well. If we lose we aren't happy, we want to win as well and we have to fight in every game to win.

“This season starts now and we can win many games. You have to trust the players and everyone. I think we can do this as a team and we're going to win games, I'm sure."
