Mogashoa: What We Expect From Komphela

Mogashoa: What We Expect From Komphela

Steve Komphela

Swallows FC chairman David Mogashoa has given a challenge to new coach Steve Komphela after the club finished in the top eight last season.

Komphela has joined the Dube Birds on a one-year contract, with an option to extend for another campaign, from Mamelodi Sundowns, who are expected to confirm Michael Loftman as Rulani Mokwena's assistant.

Mogashoa has challenged Komphela to finish above eighth place, to show progress in what the team is doing.

"The core of our squad is still there. If you look at where we finished, it means we have good players. We don't have bad players, so we don't really have to change much. I have made it clear to coach Steve (Komphela) that I don't want a big squad. You know that Swallows' financial issues are well documented, so I told him that I don't want a squad that's going to take me back there. I've just come out of that problem, so I don't want to go back to the same problem," Mogashoa told the Siya crew.

"The mandate is very simple. We had coach Musa and people were saying he is coaching with a welding certificate and he finished in the top eight. So, we expect coach Steve to build from top eight going up. We can't undo what has been done, so we need to build from the top eight going up. But obviously that's going to need a lot of support from management. Coming from Sundowns, we are going to need to give him tools that we didn't have or we didn't think we would get. Coach Steve has learnt a lot from Sundowns, so there are things that he will bring that will improve the club. When he requests those things, we must not think that Steve is trying to turn Swallows into a Sundowns. We must look at it as though he wants to improve Swallows."

Komphela may not have come cheap, but Mogashoa believes the appointment of the former Kaizer Chiefs coach is worth it.

"Look, you cannot say a Bentley is not expensive. If you say a Bentley is expensive, then it means you can't afford it. Coach Steve comes at what I feel is worth it and I feel what we are paying is not money down the drain. Swallows will benefit more than what we are paying coach Steve."
