With the 2017 AFCON tournament now under way, we look back at the 1996 Bafana Bafana squad that won the competition and how Bafana has done in AFCON throughout the years.
The 1996 tournament was held in South Africa after Kenya withdrew. Bafana Bafana was pitted against Cameroon, Angola and Egypt, and the team got off to a fantastic start, beating Cameroon 3-0.
South Africa lost only one match in the group stages, and that was to Egypt. The team scored a total of 11 goals in the tournament, and conceded only two strikes. In the semi-finals, Bafana beat Ghana 3-0, and then went on to win the competition by beating Tunisia 2-0 in the final.
John "Shoes" Moshoeu and Mark Williams were joint second place in the top goalscorers ranking at the event, with four goals each.
In AFCON 1998, Bafana Bafana made it to the finals again, but were unfortunately defeated by Egypt.
Who will forget when SA celebrated after playing to a goalless draw with Sierra Leone thinking that was enough to qualify for AFCON 2012? Niger, South Africa and Sierra Leone all ended on nine points in the group, but Niger qualified on goal difference.
In 2013, South Africa hosted the tournament again. They topped Group A but failed to advance to the semis after losing to Mali in the quarter-finals.
Last year, Bafana failed to qualify for the tournament for the second time. They came third in a qualifying group that featured Cameroon, Mauritania and Gambia.
What do you think has gone wrong with Bafana over the years?
