'Komphela Pulled Chiefs Back'

'Komphela Pulled Chiefs Back'

Steve Komphela will hope his side win all their remaining Absa Premiership encounters if they are to finish the season with more points than they did in the previous Absa Premiership campaign.

The Glamour boys finished their 2016/17 league season with 50 points, and this time around they can only get as much as 51 points. The third spot on the log is also at stake, and that will also depend on how Maritzburg United fare in their remaining games.

Supporters Club member and Amakhosi fan khosibybirth548 has once again expressed his views regarding Komphela's stats since taking over as the Phefeni team's head coach in 2015.

"Well, even those years we still won the SA Super 8 and Telkom Cup, respectively. Coaches who couldn't win the league, like Dolezar, VV and Muhsin, still gave us trophies. Whichever way we look at it, Steve is the worst coach Chiefs have ever employed.

"The worst part is that all other coaches had to leave for not winning enough trophies, especially the league. Yet this Komphela, who has won nothing, sees through an entire three-year contract. That's how least ambitious the Motaungs have become.

"There was a time when Steve played attractive football but failed to get results. He has since resorted to defensive tactics, which was partially acceptable in the beginning. However, come 2018, when the team had grown in confidence and were in contention for the league, Steve maintained his system. Little did he realise that the players had peaked under his mentorship and the time had come to go for the jugular.

"At the turn of the year, having won about four games or so in succession, he played Downs at a 'peak hour'. Stupidly, when downs were playing for a draw, he failed to capitalise and decided to settle for an unnecessary draw. The rest is history. This coach failed to smell the blood.

"January 2018 was a time when he was supposed to relinquish his defensive mind-set. The players were ready. The coach wasn't. He pulled us back. At best, Steve is an analyst, not a coach. He would do better in studio with Robert Marawa or having his own football show.

"I rest my case."
