Barker Opens Up On Sekgota Signing, Secret To Beating Pirates

Barker Opens Up On Sekgota Signing, Secret To Beating Pirates

Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker has discussed what former Kaizer Chiefs winger Kgaogelo Sekgota brings to his team, and why they had an advantage over Orlando Pirates in their opening victory.

Chiefs parted ways with Sekgota last week on Tuesday and he was announced by the Western Cape side on Saturday morning.

Despite a short time at Stellenbosch, the former Bidvest Wits winger was in the matchday squad against Pirates on Saturday evening and was handed his debut off the bench, as Steve Barker's charges edged the Buccaneers 1-0.

Barker says Sekgota still has to gain his match sharpness but enthused that he will add a lot of quality and excitement to his youthful squad and will help to get the crowd behind them.

"I believe we're done (with signings), we've got a full squad now so it was good for us late to get Sekgota. He's not as match sharp as he can be, he didn't play too many friendlies while they (Chiefs) were sort of on tour," Barker said in the press conference.

"So, we need to get him to a good level but I think he'll add a lot of excitement, a lot of value to the team. He's got the ability to go past, he's got pace, that's how we play the game with our front players with a lot of energy.

"There's not one outfield player in our squad that's over the age of 29, so it's a youthful exuberant squad with a lot of running in them, so hopefully we can do that, if we can get the crowd behind us, I think there can be some exciting times ahead," he said.

Barker also admitted that their access to Pirates' pre-season friendlies in their tour of Spain helped them to prepare while they were a closed book to the Soweto giants.

"Yes, it did definitely help, I don't think they had the same (access) on us, we did our analysis on them, you know what they like to do is to get their full-backs high," Barker explained.

"They like to tuck in (Monnapule) Saleng and (Patrick) Maswanganyi and we thought with (Fortune) Makaringe or (Kabelo) Dlamini, then you know they play almost with three tens, with (Zakhele) Lepasa upfront.

"So the plan was to block that middle pass, once they went wide, shuffle and deny them," he added.
