Mamelodi Sundowns will open the Carling Knockout Cup when they visit TS Galaxy in the round of 16 clash on Wednesday evening at Mbombela Stadium.
Carling Knockout
Teams: TS Galaxy v Mamelodi Sundowns
Date: 18 October 2023
Venue: Mbombela Stadium
Time: 19h30
Sundowns went all the way in the first cup tournament of the season, the MTN8, but lost 3-1 on penalties to Orlando Pirates in the final after a goalless draw in extra-time.
Following the international break, the Brazilians will be without seven players, goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, Themba Zwane, Aubrey Modiba, Khuliso Mudau, Teboho Mokoena, Grant Kekana and Mothobi Mvala, who were all with Bafana Bafana in Ivory Coast, after their 1-1 draw in Abidjan on Tuesday evening.
If Mokoena was available for Sundowns, he was not going to play, as he is suspended for the accumulation of yellow cards.
Galaxy, meanwhile, come into the game looking to redeem their early season form, as they are winless in their last five matches and have lost three of those games after a 3-0 defeat to Stellenbosch in the DStv Premiership before the FIFA break.
The Rockets will be playing for the first time in the League Cup, as by the time they bought the Premiership status of Highlands Park in 2020 (ahead of the 2020/21 campaign), the Telkom Knockout was discontinued.
The last team to win the League Cup under previous sponsors Telkom was Sundowns in the 2019/20 season.
Here's how they line up:
Galaxy: Ntwari, Munyai, Letsoenyo, M.Mahlangu, Sanoka, Mbunjana, Parker, Vidal, Sebelebele, Mojela, S.Mahlangu
