Bafana Name Starting XI For AFCON Qualifier Opener

Bafana Bafana will open their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers campaign when they host Uganda on Friday evening at Orlando Stadium.

Bafana, who finished third at the previous AFCON tournament, last played competitively in June, in back-to-back 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier matches.

Hugo Broos' charges played to a 1-1 draw away against Nigeria and thrashed Zimbabwe 3-1 in Bloemfontein.

Bafana are level on seven points, with Rwanda, who occupy top spot and third-placed Benin, in the World Cup qualifiers in Group C.

Uganda, on the other hand, also last played competitive games in June, in back-to-back home games Botswana and Algeria in the World Cup qualifiers.

After a 1-0 win over the Zebras and a 2-1 defeat against the Desert Foxes, the Cranes were left lying fifth in Group G, although only three points behind leaders Algeria in the World Cup qualifiers.

For AFCON qualifiers, Republic of the Congo have already clocked three points in Group K after edging South Sudan 1-0 on Thursday.

The last time the sides clashed was in a friendly international in 2021 after Bafana won 3-2 thanks to a brace by Evidence Makgopa and another goal by Bongokuhle Hlongwane.
