Can Chiefs Breach Pirates' Solid Defence?

Can Chiefs Breach Pirates' Solid Defence?

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Arthur Zwane will have one big concern ahead of the Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates from a statistical point of view.

Chiefs went into their MTN8 semi-final second leg against AmaZulu last weekend needing to score at least one goal to have any chance of reaching the final after a 1-1 draw in the first-leg favoured Usuthu.

However, despite applying the pressure, the Glamour Boys did not have any shots on target and ultimately bowed out of the tournament.

Having no shots on target against AmaZulu would be a worrying factor for Zwane and his technical team, given how strong Pirates are defensively, from their statistics so far this season.

The Buccaneers also denied Mamelodi Sundowns, with their array of attacking players, with the team's leading goascorer Peter Shalulile in the side, any shots on target in the semi-final first leg and kept a clean sheet against the Brazilians in the second-leg as they thrashed them 3-0.

Jose Riveiro's charges have impressed in shutting teams out at the back, as they boast an incredible nine clean sheets in 15 games this season.

So Chiefs will have their work cut out to have shots on target against their bitter rivals in the eagerly awaited sold out derby clash at FNB Stadium.

Soccer Laduma looks at elements that Amakhosi will hope to get right going forward to trouble the Sea Robbers.

Kgaogelo Sekgota's wing play

When Sekgota is on form, Chiefs tend to get chances from his trickery and burst of pace on the left side of their attack. The former Swallows winger will be hoping to use the space left behind by either Thabiso Monyane and Bandile Shandu when they join Pirates' attack.

Keagan Dolly's set-piece ability

Dolly's ability on set-pieces is always an ace up Chiefs' sleeve and the Glamour Boys will want to play closer to the Sea Robbers' box, to provoke fouls in the danger zones. The former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder is the second-highest goalscorer in the team with three goals.

Ashley Du Preez's pace

Du Preez boosted his confidence with a goal against TS Galaxy after a long period without finding the back of the net. The speedy attacker scored from his strength in playing off the shoulder of the last defender, as Chiefs were without striker Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana against the Rockets.

Bimenyimana's aggression and aerial strength

Zwane suggested that they desperately missed Bimenyimana's presence in the box after their draw against TS Galaxy and the Burundian was brought back against Usuthu for the same reason, despite injury concerns.

Solomons to start ahead of Frosler?

Dillan Solomons gave Chiefs speed and energy going forward after he replaced Reeve Frosler late in the game against Usuthu and in order to trouble the Pirates defence, he could opt to play Solomons, especially given that the Buccaneers usually play with overlapping full-backs.
