Waiting Game For Chiefs & Downs On Mayo

Any club keen on snatching free-scoring Khanyisa Mayo from Cape Town City will have to wait a little bit longer as the club are not willing to sell him just yet.

Soccer Laduma has it on good authority that the Citizens will be willing to sell Patrick Mayo's son to anyone willing to cough out $2 million (R37.4 million at today's exchange rate).

However, according to Siya sources, the Citizens are not in a hurry to sell the player just yet and will only be willing to listen to offers at the end of the current campaign. At the moment, the Mother City-based outfit want him to assist the club attain the highest finish in the championship.

Both Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs were at one stage jostling each other for the services of the left-footed star. Amakhosi, in particular, have not been potent in front of goal and could do with a lethal man like Mayo considering that they have scored a paltry 13 goals in 13 matches.

On the other hand, the Mthatha-born player has been able to find the net on an impressive seven occasions and is currently the leading goalscorer in the DStv Premiership.

The Brazilians, however, are also in need of a consistently reliable goalscorer as they struggled during the last couple of weeks following injuries to most of their marksmen, including Peter Shalulile, Lucas Ribeiro Costa and long-term absentee Abubeker Nasir.

With their hectic domestic and continental schedule, they were forced to adopt an alien system attacking without a recognised striker, at one stage utilising midfield man Themba Zwane as their target man.

It's literally a numbers' game at present regarding the chase for the attacker's signature, and it remains to be seen which of his suitors are prepared to pay the big money to lure Mayo to their camp come January or end of the season.
