Update: Mpontshane's Future After Pirates Exit

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA - FEBRUARY 04: Siyabonga Mpontshane during the DStv Premiership match between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns at Orlando Stadium on February 04, 2023 in Johannesburg, South Africa

A decision is pending for Siyabonga Mpontshane regarding his future following his exit from Orlando Pirates.

After nine-and-a-half years with the Buccaneers, having joined the club in January 2015 from the now defunct Platinum Stars, Mpontshane said his goodbyes to the Soweto giants at the end of June following the expiry of his contract.

The veteran goalkeeper left the club having acquired a legendary status for his loyal service and the professional way he always carried himself on and off the field.

While it had been thought that the 38-year-old might consider calling time to his career, indications are that he is assessing options about a potential next move for the upcoming season.

"Siya (Mpontshane) is still feeling strong and will be ready for the next challenge, that's for sure. He is a professional who looks after himself very well and there is no doubt that he can still go on for another few seasons," said the source.

"Yes, a career in goalkeeper training is something that has been bandied about for him for the future, but for now he is open to opportunities as a player," concluded the source.
