Orlando Pirates are closing in on appointing a new head coach ahead of the 2025/26 season, but one of the high-profile names previously linked with the job – Marco Rose – is now understood to be an unlikely option.
Recent reports suggested that the former RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Monchengladbach manager was among the candidates considered by the Buccaneers hierarchy as they look to usher in a new era.

With Pirates reportedly planning a pre-season trip to Germany, the speculation around Rose intensified, given his Bundesliga pedigree and Champions League experience.
However, Siya sources have revealed that the financial demands involved in luring the German tactician to South Africa could prove to be out of reach for the local PSL market.
It is now believed that Rose is more likely to continue his career in Europe, where he remains in demand.
“Bringing Marco Rose to the PSL would require a significant financial commitment, and at this stage, it appears unlikely. All indications are that he will continue his coaching career in Europe,” said the source

Meanwhile, former AmaZulu and Al-Faisaly coach Pablo Franco Martin is understood to be still in the running.
While Rose’s name brought excitement among some supporters, it now appears that Pirates will pursue a more feasible appointment – still likely to be a foreign coach – with an official announcement expected before the end of this month.
